Depression

For depression, I like a treatment method called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT for short.  I utilize this treatment method because there have been so many studies demonsrating its effectiveness and I have seen it work with my clients.

Its main premise is that feelings are dictated by thoughts and beliefs, which are sometimes so automatic that you don't even realize you are thinking or believing that.  So, if the majority of your thoughts and beliefs are negative, you will feel negative most of the time.

I help you tackle this cycle by first becoming more aware of your feelings, thoughts, and beliefs.  I then help you figure out whether these thoughts and beliefs are really accurate and if not, make them more accurate.  There is much more to CBT but this is the main idea.

Note that it’s normal to feel bad when a negative thing happens and it is important to feel those feelings, which I will help you with too.  Your thoughts and beliefs are worked on if you continue to feel bad for a long time after a negative thing happens or if you feel bad when nothing negative has happened.
